There were 45 participants representing sixteen Franciscan congregations in Kenya, Damietta Peace Initiative (DPI), Justice Peace and Integrity of Creation Franciscans Africa (JPIC FA), Kenya Movement of Catholic Professionals (Pax Romana), Edmund Rice International (ERI) and the Marist Foundation for International Solidarity (FMSI) Pax Romana, ERI, and FMSI had joined with Franciscans to draft the alternative report presented in the last quarter of 2009. The facilitators were Br. Jim Jolley (FMSI), Br. Brain Bond (ERI) and Morse Flores (FI). The participants were excited when clips from the three-hour review session for Kenya on may 6 were shown. “I am glad poor people in the slums can report the government to other governments when it fails to meet our demands” said Sr. Penninah Mukulu LSOSF. “We are now going to make sure we monitor government’s commitment on resettlement and housing of Internally Displaced Persons” said Br. Daniel Muraya OSF, from Molo. John Otieno of Youth Alive Africa Kenya said “Our members of Youth Alive can be very useful in collecting the relevant data for drafting preliminary reports.” Brother Straton Malisaba from a Marist Brother from Malawi was glad he had attended since his country was coming up for review in the 9th session. Agnes from ERI and Nellie from Pax Romana were grateful for the fact that FI’s international partnerships are being replicated in Kenya. The FI convener in Kenya Sr. Venantius Munee LSOSF, Fr. Gianfrancesco Sisto, OFM and Richard Kakeeto of JPIC FA and Fr. Godfrey Odunga of DPI did local coordination for the training. The participants have joined up working groups, to follow up particular recommendations that the government of Kenya accepted. |
