Today the world celebrates the Africa Day, the annual commemoration on May 25 of the 1963 founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). On this day, 32 independent African states signed the founding charter in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). In 2002, the OAU became African Union. As an expression of its concern for Africa, UNESCO will stage the Africa week on the theme “Pan-Africanism” with particular emphasis on rapprochement of cultures and the role of young people. A series of events, conferences and exhibitions are planned at UNESCO to mark this week.
